City adopts touchscreen kiosks with environmentally sustainable design

The City of Minneapolis has partnered with Flowbird, a leader in urban mobility solutions, to introduce new pay station technology to its parking and transport services.

Flowbird has replaced the city’s parking kiosks with 700 Flowbird CWT touch multi-use terminals, offering citizens a wide choice of payment options, including contactless credit or debit card, or a digital wallet such as Apple Pay and Google Pay. This enables swift payments for on-and-off street parking in the Minneapolis/St. Paul region.

The all new parking terminals are fully solar-powered, ADA compliant, and equipped with full-colour touch displays that resemble the look and feel of a tablet. The kiosks wirelessly communicate to Flowbird’s analytics platform, providing the city with tools to analyse urban mobility activity and streamline operations.

The City has also expanded its terminals for Minneapolis transit. An additional 100 Flowbird terminals have been installed for off-board fare collection for METRO Transit’s Bus Rapid Transit system.

Plans are also underway to deploy the company’s latest self-service ticketing terminals across the city’s Orange line light rail system and its D-Line Bus Rapid Transit network over the next two years. Metro Transit originally procured the current Flowbird system in 2016 for off-board fare collection on its A-Line BRT, with a focus on quickening boarding times at each station.

Flowbird smart kiosks are used throughout the Minneapolis/St. Paul region for on-street parking, parking at city parks, and for off-board fare collection for METRO Transit’s Bus Rapid Transit system.  Close to 1,000 Flowbird kiosks are installed throughout the Twin Cities.

The terminals are managed using Flowbird’s cloud-based, fully hosted back office. Transaction and alert information is communicated to the central system in real-time for reporting and maintenance purposes.
