Long-standing technology partner Flowbird rolls-out ticketing infrastructure

Press release, June 08, 2023: Edinburgh Trams, operator of the tramway in Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh, has launched a three-mile line extension. It creates a spine across the city, making tram travel accessible to tens of thousands of new customers.

Eight new stops opened from June 7, providing convenient access for passengers all the way from Edinburgh Airport to Newhaven. Serving some of the city’s most densely populated areas, it brings trams to Leith Walk for the first time since 1956. A turn-up and go service is operating, with trams running every seven minutes from 6am until midnight, every day.

World class ticketing infrastructure

Long-standing technology partner Flowbird installed new ticketing infrastructure at each of the stops along the new route. The hardware provided includes 12 new ticket vending machines, 60 handheld devices and 100 new platform validators. On the existing tram network, 60 validators were also updated.

Tram passengers will now be able to use the new ticket vending machines to select the correct ticket and pay for journeys using contactless bank cards or mobile devices.
